Welcome to Mount Elgon in Uganda
Mount Elgon is a volcanic mountain in Uganda with the largest caldera in the world. It rises up to 4321m asl, making it Africa’s 8th highest peak. The large mountain spanning over 80km in diameter is found in the Mount Elgon national park. It’s a perfect combination of montane, mixed bamboo, heather zone, and moorland vegetation cover.
The Mount Elgon region is a hiker’s paradise. Although Mount Elgon is now a dormant volcano, eruptions of the mountain over the centuries created various unique features. The sloping terrain and beautiful landscape makes it the perfect place for a peaceful getaway. There are many hiking trails all over the region and we will get you to all the ones you desire.
However, hiking is not the only activity to do in this region. There are several activities to keep you on your toes. Interesting attractions in the Mount Elgon region include Sipi Falls, Chebonet Falls, Wanala Ridge and Sisiyi Falls.

Mount Elgon Hike to Wagagai Peak (elevation 4321m asl)
The Mount Elgon hike is a thrilling hike to the highest peak of the mountain, deep inside Mount Elgon National Park. The best thing about this trip is that it’s suitable for people of all ages. Children over 10, adults, and older people can enjoy this hike. Besides, some of the trails are not so demanding, they work for people of different age groups.
Explore the various types of vegetation and forest cover in Mount Elgon National Park. Most of the trails start in the montane forest, before leading you to the mixed bamboo zone. Thereafter, they lead you to the heather zone and moorland. These offer a unique range of views and different species of beautiful plants for example the everlasting flowers are a sight to behold.
Mount Elgon is home to a various wildlife. You may encounter monkeys, mountain antelopes and duikers among others as you hike along the trails.
Enjoy the peace and tranquillity the trails offer. The trails are off the beaten path, which means you’ll only listen to the beautiful sounds of nature as you take them. Moreover, the strain from the hike will clear your mind and distract you from the stress of daily life.
Above all, Mount Elgon National Park is very safe. In addition to that, the Uganda Wildlife Authority provides security for all taking the hike. For that reason, you’ll only have to worry about getting to the peak.
At Mount Elgon hikers, we use three trails for the Mount Elgon hike. The 3 days Bushiyi trail, 4 days Sipi-Bushiyi trail and 6 days Piswa-Bushiyi trail. These trails vary in distance, difficulty and features that may be encountered. Read through the information on them and decide which one may suit you.


What to bring for Hiking Mount Elgon
Hiking to the summit of Mount Elgon requires a good level of physical fitness. Cardiovascular exercises, such as jogging or cycling, and strength training exercises, such as squats and lunges, can help prepare you for the climb.

Health and Safety:
You should bring any necessary medication. You should also be aware of the risks of altitude sickness and take the necessary precautions.
Finally, it’s important to be respectful of the environment and leave no trace. This means packing out all trash and being mindful of where you camp and hike to minimize your impact on the mountain’s fragile ecosystem.

3 DAYS HIKE TO MT. ELGON-BUSHIYI TRAIL
The Bushiyi trail is the shortest trail to the peak of Mount Elgon, taking only 3 days. This trail is ideal for travellers who want to reach the peak and return in the shortest time possible. Since it’s a very intense trail, you’ll need to be physically fit. The trail is found in Bududa, a place with a scenic landscape comprising of high hills and deep valleys.
4 DAYS HIKE TO MT. ELGON-SIPI-BUSHIYI TRAIL
This trail starts from Kapkwai exploration centre near Sipi. When going for this hike, you’ll most likely spend the night in Sipi.


4 DAYS HIKE TO MT. ELGON-SIPI-BUSHIYI TRAIL

6 DAYS HIKE TO MT. ELGON-PISWA-BUSHIYI TRAIL
This the longest trail. It’s ideal for those who want to take their time exploring the forest. Because it takes a longer time, it may not be as challenging as the other trails so it’s even suitable for those who are not extremely fit.
The gentle and gradually rising slopes of the Piswa trail are the perfect way to explore Mount Elgon National Park. It starts you off from thick montane forest cover, and slowly leads you to the moorland.
Expect to see seneicio plants, vibrant flowers, and artimesia plants while on this trail. While on the Piswa trail, you may see blue tailed monkeys, duikers, mountain antelopes, and several species of birds.
Who are the people on Mt Elgon
The people living around Mount Elgon are primarily the Bagisu and Sabiny ethnic groups in Uganda, and the Sabaot ethnic group in Kenya. These communities have a rich cultural heritage and have lived in the region for generations, cultivating the land and practicing traditional agriculture.
They have unique customs, languages, and traditions that contribute to the diverse cultural landscape of the area. These two tribes are well known for their famous traditional activity circumcision which is carried out every even year, they are always welcoming to the tourists visiting their area so no need to worry about them it’s a friendly community.

After the Mount Elgon hike, you can head on to your desired location. If you have never visited Sipi, we recommend going there.
Explore Sipi Falls and all the amazing features around it. There are caves, hills, unique rock formations and other waterfalls like Chebonet falls.
